Hint of an Echo
Born of a desire to create something new with pigment on a two dimensional surface these works were developed at the intersection of art and science. Following a path of investigation between ideas, materials and nature I have developed a new way to materialize light with just paint on a two dimensional surface. From one simple idea emerged a series of experiments, then proof of concept, from which emerged subsequent ideas, all of which led to a continuation of the investigation in this manner for the first year of the pandemic. I have since returned to this work off and on over the past several years and recently completed an ephemeral water sculpture which is the latest iteration in the series.
Some present a focal point of energy projecting from within that follows the viewer’s line of sight while others glow as a mass of energy and light that shifts as the person moves across the room. Meanwhile others are presented flat so that the viewer may experience them in the round, all the while with an illusory depth that seems to rest in front of or behind the actual picture plane. Because they react to the viewer’s line of sight, at any given point in time, each viewer will be having a unique experience.
Inherent in their nature, these works focus on the relationship between light and dark, the balance between the two, and the simple abstract essence this creates.
Light and sound posses the same properties and thus can both produce echos. Light echoes, it reverberates, it hovers, it projects back from what seems to be an internal source of energy. Hence the title: Hint of an Echo

At present I am installing a ventilation system in my studio which will allow me to work on larger pieces in oil and acrylic that do not need to be framed, similar to the two works below. I will notify and upload these works to the website as they are finished.
